Series Synopsis:
The series gives a tongue in cheek behind the scenes look at what it takes to put together a community television tonight show and the hapless hopefuls that are working on it. Set at the offices of “The Madhouse,” a program produced by students from fictional Bligh University, the show-within-a-show concept is handed to a new generation who don’t really understand it. Hosted by smarmy Rick York, “The Madhouse” is a tonight show, that thanks to their flighty producer Penny, struggles to muster guests, crew, directors and still only has one working light globe in the office. What it does have going for it is that, even if they screw up, only 2000 people in all of Melbourne saw it.
The Community was written and created by Anthony Earl and Trevor Wood, and draws upon their extensive knowledge of the workings and insanity of community TV. "The show isn't about attacking community television, there are some really genuine people in community tv and we've got them in our show, we really love these characters." says Wood, "But there are also some people who have some really odd mentalities and when we were working on community television we dealt with some people who were totally crazy. If anything, our show tones those characters down to believable levels". Added Earl, hoping to not sound superfluous, "The big thing for me, working on community TV, was that there seemed to be a confluence of passion, aspiration and insanity. It was intense and inspiring."
